12 Day Pug Nose Rub Challenge

pug nose rub product

April tests out a nose rub.

I have always heard of these ‘nose rubs’ for pugs but never tried them out. For April’s 16th birthday I finally decided to try one that I picked up at the local Petsmart. There are not many other pet shops in the area and when they showed me the product I figured to give it a shot.

The nose rub is called GNC Dog Essentials-Nose Care and was the only product they had at the store for ‘chapped noses’. It was somewhere around $10.00 and I bought that along with all of April’s other birthday gifts.

I started using it on April’s 16th birthday (April 4th up until today) to fully review the product. It has now been 12 days since I started using the product and the pictures below show each day and if there were any changes.

Day 1: The start of it all.

Day 2: April doesn’t seem to mind it, just massage in and go!

Day 3: It seems to be drying out a bit.

Day 4: Her nose seems even more ‘chappy’, could it be the hot weather too?

Day 5: While I was applying a small piece of her nose came off. Was this suppose to happen? Does not say anything about this on the container.

Day 6: It is a little bit smoother but still pretty dry after application and throughout the day.

Day 7: Her nose started getting ‘white’ from being dry even after the application, not seeing much difference from day 1.

Day 8: Another piece has come off her nose (still a bit odd to me), and not as smooth as I was expecting.

Day 9: The white dryness has returned and it does not seem to be getting any better.

Day 10: It still looks chappy and very disappointing to not see a huge change.

Day 11: Another piece has come off her nose. I’m guessing this is suppose to happen? Yet still very odd.

Day 12: I still have hope but definitely not seeing the results I had wanted. Especially after 12 days!!

So what is my conclusion of this ‘nose care’ product? Well honestly I am very disappointed. I wanted to give it a shot and figured getting in 12 days would suffice. Obviously 12 days has not been enough or this product just ultimately does not work. It is sad because it is the first product I have tried to smooth out her nose in 16 years and it was a big bummer!

Since I did buy it and don’t want it to go to waste (even if it really is a waste of time), I feel that I should just use it up until it is gone and never buy it again. If anyone else has used this product and has seen results I would love to hear about it. The funny thing is that it has a pug on the front of the product, and well strangely has done nothing for my pug. Is is because she is 16 years old, could her nose be ‘beyond repair’? I doubt it as I have heard so many other ideas from Aprils loving supporters.

I have heard many great things about other products from all of you, (vitamin E, Vasoline, Aquaphor, Snout Soother, etc). After we are done with this product We will be trying something else in the hopes of results. If you can let us know your remedies as well we would love to hear about it! The overwhelming response of fb has been hard for us to remember everything but would love to try something out that ‘works’!

As for now, I’m not necessarily saying this product is ‘horrible’, it just has not done what I wanted within the 12 days of us testing it. I am sure others have had different experiences with it but for us I would not recommend it from what we have seen so far.

I only ever want the very best for April, and this product just didn’t do it for us.

Let us know your thoughts and recommendations as our eyes and ears are always open. :). Thank you for listening and be sure to come back for more April!

I use Rose balm for my pug Sir Drakes nose. It works beautifully. He is 12

The Snout Soother cost more, but we saw great results. I saw results within days, but my pug does not like me putting it on her nose. We also used it on a boxer and her nose has peeled and it looks like a brand new nose now. Both noses are still dry though, so I may try the coconut oil.

I second on the coconut oil!

Try Coconut Oil. Works great for my pup and is natural so if they lick – it doesn’t have bad chemicals.

I don’t think I would keep trying it. I’ve used Aquafor on my dogs’ noses and it’s great. Cheaper too.
